This is our collection of ebonized boxwood chess pieces. Boxwood is extremely hard and has very little grain, and when it's dyed black and polished to a fine luster, it looks very close to real ebony. At less than half the price of ebony, a well-done set of ebonized chess pieces is a tremendous value for those who want traditional black pieces but not the ebony price.
Our high-quality ebonized boxwood chess sets are all handmade by highly skilled craftsmen one piece at a time, using lathes and special turning tools. The knights are hand-carved one knight at a time, using a variety of different tools to achieve the detail added to each piece. All antique wooden chess pieces are then carefully sanded, polished, and lacquered. Weights are added to the base for stability and balance, and a thick green baize pad is added for a soft feel on the chess board. Every set includes spare queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authentication, so you always know exactly what your chess set is, when it was made, and where it came from.
