Wooden Sets vs Plastic Sets
Of course personal preference takes the call, but there are trends that are observable.
The vast majority of sets used in higher level Chess events are in wood.
The plastic sets you see pictured from more elite events are pretty much all from before the 1970’s. Since then you will see wood sets.
When looking at sellers you will see more Wood set options than Plastic. When most people talk of buying a nice set, it is usually Wood.
Wood pieces are more expensive than plastic ones.

Wooden sets are weighted more often than plastic ones.
In all elite chess tournaments we see wooden sets more often than plastic.
Plastic ones are preferrable for rapid games and daily use.
Chess has its roots a royal game and the authenticity and elegnace comes from wooden sets than plastic.
Wooden chess sets are also used for décor purposes while it is not the same for the plastic chess.
Wooden chess sets lasts longer if stored in proper condition whereas plastic sets may become brittle with age depending upon the composition.
Wood is definitely an eco friendly product. Expert says that playing with a wooden chess set improves our game. They are also very impressive to look at and can be used as a home décor.
A good quality chess set lasts longer which can be passed on to generations with memories. Improperly stored plastic sets may warp more than wooden sets. Wooden chess sets have lots of variety in different types of wood such as ebony wood, bud rose wood, sandal wood, box wood, rose wood, walnut whereas the options are very limited in plastic sets. Exotic luxury chess sets are expensive to buy but there are less expensive sets also available on our chess store that are made from box wood, sheesham or walnut

If you are looking for a roll-up board then this green and buff board should be your 1st choice. The back has a lining and the board contrasts well with the typical black and white pieces. Very well made

I absolutely love these Romanian Hungarian Pieces. I had seen similar pieces in a YouTube video that showed old footage of titled players at a European chess tournament. I commented asking where to get them, but hadn't got a reply. So when I saw these, I had to snap them up! They are a joy to handle and to look at.
